Managing payments efficiently is crucial for any business. With Cone, you have the flexibility to choose and control how your clients pay you. This article will guide you step-by-step on how to set up direct debit as the preferred payment method for your clients—either by adding their bank details yourself or by requesting the information from them
Why use direct debit?
Direct debit is a secure and convenient way to collect payments directly from your client’s bank account. Sometimes, you may want to require clients to use direct debit instead of other payment methods, such as credit cards. Cone makes this process simple and flexible
Two ways to set up direct debit
You can enable direct debit for your clients using either of these approaches:
Add bank information yourself
If you already have your client’s bank details, you can add them directly in Cone:
- Go to your client’s - Settings
- Navigate to - Payment Collectionand view the current payment methods
- Click - Add payment method
- Click - Copyto copy a secure link, then open it in your browser
 
- Enter the client’s bank information - Search for the client’s bank, or 
- Select - Enter Manuallyand input the routing and account numbers
- Confirm the details. The bank account will now appear as a payment method for the client 
 
Request bank details from your client
If you want your client to provide their own bank details:
- In your client’s - Payment collectionsettings, go to- Allowed payment options
- Copy the payment link and share it directly with your client, or 
- Send an email from Cone with the payment link - Your client will receive a link where they can only enter their bank details 
 
Making added direct debit the default payment method
Once the bank account is added:
- Go back to the client’s payment methods in Cone 
- Click the three dots next to the new bank account 
- Select - Set as default
 
- Future payments will now be collected automatically via direct debit from this account
